SECOND TERM VOCABULARY

tough: hard to break.
rinse: to wash lightly, as by pouring water over as a final stage in washing.
tender: soft or delicate in substance.
straw: a single stalk or stem, esp. of a cereal grass.
foolish: stupid.
nappy: a piece of cloth or paper put between a baby's legs to soak up urine.
starch: a white, tasteless chemical substance in plants, forming an important component of rice, corn,     wheat, and many other vegetable foods.
drag: to pull slowly and with effort;haul.
        • logs: a portion or length of the trunk or of a large limb of a tree that has fallen.
icing: a sweet mixture of sugar, butter, and flavoring, used as a coating on cakes, cookies, etc.
tray: a flat, shallow container, used for carrying or displaying articles.
deck: a floorlike surface taking up one level of a hull of a vessel.
fence: a barrier enclosing or surrounding a field, yard, etc., usually made of posts and wire or wood.
        bruises: to injure by striking or pressing, without breaking the skin but causing a discolored spot to          
                develop.
shrink: to (cause to) contract or lessen in size.
gnawing: to bite or chew on, esp. for a long time without stopping.
        • bishops: a person who supervises a diocese and is a member of the highest order of the ministry.
        • claw: a sharp, curved nail on the foot of an animal, such as on a cat.
misty: bounding in or clouded by mist.
denial: an assertion that another statement is false.
to rear: o take care of and support (a young person) up to the age of maturity.
to tilt: to (cause to) lean, slant, or incline.
core: the central part of a fleshy fruit, containing the seeds.
